4th of July fireworks to light up the sky in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Fourth of July fireworks will light up the sky once again in Cape Girardeau.

The City Parks and Recreation Foundation got $12,000 in donations needed for this summer's Independence Day fireworks.

The initial anonymous donor gave $6,000 and the Isle of Capri Casino matched that with another $6,000.

The Parks and Recreation Department will work with the USA Veterans' Organization to finalize details of the show in the coming weeks.

The fireworks are set to go off around dusk on July 4th, at around 9:15 p.m. at Arena Park.

Cape Girardeau police investigate shots fired

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Cape Girardeau police are investigating after a report of shots fired Wednesday.

It happened at the intersection of Themis and Hanover.

Police were looking for a black male chasing a person and firing a gun at him.

Southeast releases 2013 spring Dean's List

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University has named 2,496 students to its Dean’s list for academic achievement during the spring 2013 session.

Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours during the spring session.

Old Town Cape receives 2013 National Main Street Program Accreditation

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Old Town Cape has received Accreditation from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Main Street Center and the Missouri Main Street Connection.

Old Town Cape joins other Main Street revitalization programs across the country being recognized, including only 7 other Missouri programs. This is the 9th year Old Town Cape has received its National Accreditation.

The organization was evaluated on its performance in 2012 and it was determined that it met all ten performance standards and criteria required to be named an accredited Main Street program. The ten standards of performance help keep the Main Street movement strong and focused nationally.

Claire Herbst receives Belcher scholarship

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Each year, the Missouri School Boards’ Association, through its Future Builders Foundation, awards seventeen scholarships to Missouri high school seniors.

Claire Herbst, a recent graduate of Cape Central High School, is a recipient of one of those scholarships, and was recognized last night during the May meeting of the Cape Girardeau Public Schools Board of Education.

Claire will be attending Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, and will be majoring in pharmacy. She is the daughter of Charlie and Dr. Sydney Herbst.
