Heartland Blood Drive a success

(KFVS)-

It wasn't a bad day to get out and about or to stop by one of seven locations to donate at the last day of the Annual Heartland Blood Drive.

At University Mall in Carbondale people started lining up early this morning.

Some of the donors say they gave blood to help out their family members.

Others say they just wanted to help those in need.

"And the best thing is that you actually know you helped somebody," said Darcy Murphy. "And they say (it's) anywhere from one to three people you help each time you come in. So you can't do much better than that, that's one of the important things you can do."

And in Missouri it's been very busy past three days.

Officials with the American Red Cross say January is normally the worst month for blood donations, and usually it's the month hospitals need the blood the most.

"Opening Doors to Homelessness" exhibit featured by arts council

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Arts Council will host a talk and reception for the Community Caring Council's exhibit on Saturday, Jan. 14.

Starting on Saturday with the reception from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the exhibit, "Opening Doors to the Homeless," will be on display until Jan. 28. It features pieces made using a variety of media, by people living in the Cape Girardeau area who have been affected by homelessness.

The council will be organizing the speakers for the event, which will include people who work with the homeless or have experienced homelessness firsthand. They say the projects range from "Ugly Quilts" made by a woman's service group at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, to pieces that have been composed in response to, and to raise awareness of, the issue of homelessness in the Cape Girardeau community.

Bid in latest auction for Cape Girardeau federal building at $325,000

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-

Is $325,000 enough to buy Cape Girardeau's former federal building?

Leaders with the General Services Administration are weighing that offer after closing its latest auction involving the now vacant building in the 300 block of Broadway in downtown Cape.

"From here, GSA will evaluate the offer," explained spokeswoman Angela Brees.  "If accepted, we will close 30 days from the acceptance date.  We will not release the identity of the winning bidder until close."

The GSA originally put the building up for auction in May 2011 with a suggested opening bid of $750,000.

There was not a suggested bid listed with this most recent auction.
