Old Cape Girardeau barn destroyed by overnight fire

Firefighters in Cape Girardeau got an early call Wednesday morning at 2:19 of a large fire on the north end of town on Perryville Road.

They found an old barn completely engulfed in flames in the woods across from Cherokee Park. This is located near Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1855 Perryville Road.

Firefighters initially had a hard time getting to the blaze because of a small access road through the trees.

Within a half hour the old barn had collapsed. Flames could be seen shooting into the sky for many blocks around the scene.

As of 3 a.m. firefighters were still on scene but had the fire under control.

The cause of the fire and where it began is under construction.

The fire destroyed the barn, according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

Waller to change plea in federal internet threatening case

Clay Waller will change his plea in a federal internet threatening case.

According to an order filed in federal court late Tuesday afternoon, Waller will change his plea in connection with internet threat charges.

Waller is accused of threatening his missing wife's sister on the internet site Topix.  He originally pleaded not guilty.

Instead of going to trial on the charge Oct. 3, the order shows Waller will change that plea.

Waller's attorney Scott Tilsen filed a motion on September 19 to revoke the detention order keeping Waller behind bars.

A federal judge ruled Waller should be kept in custody until he goes to trial on the federal indictment charging him with writing an internet threat directed against his sister-in-law who has custody of his three small children.

DNA law solves more than 4,000 Mo. cold cases

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Missouri prosecutors call a law, expanded in 2009, "fantastic" now that the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime lab reports that law has helped solved 4,396 cases.

"These are cases that would not have been solved otherwise," said Cape County prosecuting attorney, Morley Swingle.

The law was first passed in 1991 and applied only to collecting the DNA of violent and sexual offenders. In 1996 it was modified to include felons in prison and on parole or probation.

In 2004, it was expanded to include defendants convicted of felonies or misdemeanor sexual offenses.

In 2009, lawmakers expanded Missouri's DNA tracking law to require anyone arrested for a felony or misdemeanor sex offense to be put into the state's CODIS system. That system links DNA collected from crime scenes with criminals on file. It's a change that's impacted several cases in Cape Girardeau County.
