Ninth annual Jackson BBQ Cook Off

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - The Ninth Annual Jackson Bar-B-Que Cook Off will be October 7 and 8 in the Jackson City Park.

On Friday, Oct. 7 the public is invited to enjoy live music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the bar-b-que teams.

Commander Air ordered to evacuate Cape Girardeau airport

A judge's order Monday morning requires Commander Premier Aircraft Corporation to vacate a hangar at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport immediately.

"That was what we had asked for, that was the subject of the petition", City Attorney Eric Cunningham said of the judge's order.

If the company is not out in 10 days, city attorney Eric Cunningham says they have the authority to physically remove them.

"We're having to work on a plan for how we would get all of that equipment and inventory out of the building because there's quite a bit in it", Cunningham says.  He also points out no on from Commander appeared in court to hear the judge's ruling.

According to the court documents, Commander owed the city of Cape $827,283.39 as of May 16, 2011.  The monthly rental payment under the sublease was $21, 016.67.

The last payment was made in December 2007.

Cross Country teams win 3rd place at invitational

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University announced their men and women cross country teams placed third at the Saluki Invitational on Saturday, September 24.

Both placed third among seven teams. The women ran the 5k course and the men ran the 8k.

Individual results for the men include:

2 Cape Girardeau County teenagers injured in crash

Two Cape Girardeau County teenagers were injured following a crash Saturday afternoon in Phelps County.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. on Route O, 1/2 mile south of Phelps County Road 5280.

According to state police, the the car was southbound on Route O, when the 18-year-old female driver took the car too fast around a curve and hit a dirt embankment.

The driver from Jackson, Mo. and a female 18-year-old passenger from Gordonville, Mo. received moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to a Phelps County hospital.

Troopers say both were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Party for the Good looking for volunteers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Party for the Good will hold a food packing event on September 30 at the Osage Centre in Cape Girardeau.

Volunteers are needed to help pack food for the BackPacks for Friday Program, which the group says serves over 450 children in 18 elementary schools in Southeast Missouri.

The event will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and you can pre-register online at SEMOFoodBank.org.

Carnival planned to promote after school programs

Oak Ridge, MO (KFVS) - The Oak Ridge After School Program will host its Light on Carnival next month.

The program is a part of Oak Ridge Elementary School. It aims to promote awareness of after school programs. The carnival is scheduled for Thursday, October 20th from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Elementary School at 4198 State Highway E.

The Light on Carnival includes several safety and educational booths featuring personnel from hospitals, fire departments, and local veterinarian's.

Representatives from the police department also attend to talk about strangers, as some kids walk home from school.

Members of the community, parents, and their kids are all invited to attend.

Cape Girardeau will go pink for breast cancer awareness

Cape Girardeau will go pink for breast cancer awareness

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Cape Girardeau is going pink next month to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The Dig for Life campaign launches in October. The Southeast Missouri State Women's volleyball and soccer teams are working together to promote awareness and raise money for the cause. Other schools and area businesses will also take part in the campaign.

The money raised through the campaign is used to provide free mammograms to women who can't afford to get one.

Last year's Dig for Life campaign raised $23,000. More than 200 women were able to get a mammogram at no cost.
