Proposition filed on Mo. tobacco taxes to fund education, health

(KFVS) - A group of organizations and individuals led by the American Cancer Society have filed a proposition on tobacco taxes to provide funding for public education, higher education and public health in Missouri.

The coalition sponsoring the measure is made up of medical and public health professionals, education groups, business leaders and community leaders.

“We are pleased this measure has potential to help school districts deal with the funding problems they face,” says Missouri School Boards’ Association Executive Director Dr. Carter Ward. “This proposition presents the voters of Missouri the opportunity to voice their opinion on this issue.”

The group says Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax of all states in the nation, and very high smoking and other tobacco product use rates. They say the measure filed.

Free seminar on heart health and ED

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saint Francis Medical Center will host a free seminar on heart health and erectile dysfunction on Thursday, September 22 at 6 p.m.

The community education event will talk about the relationship between ED and cardiovascular disease and how men can reduce their heart event risk.

According to Saint Francis, one in five men in the U.S. suffer from ED. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. Vincenzo Galati, DO, and cardiologist David A. Law, MD, FACC, FSCAI, both on staff at Saint Francis Medical Center, will be leading the seminar.

A significant portion of men older than 50 are affected by ED, which usually precedes chest pain by two to three years and adverse heart events by three to five years. It is important for men to be aware of their health risks and consult their physician if they experience ED or think they may be at risk for heart disease.

Seizure sensing service puppy given to girl

Mary Kay Harper, 11, of Cape Girardeau, has a seizure disorder and gets therapy at Southeast Health's Healthpoint Rehab. She also gets help from a service dog that she's had since she was a baby.

Unfortunately, her pet and helper recently passed away. When her friends at Healthpoint found out, they did something truly heartwarming, that started with a surprise!

The staff at Healthpoint presented a new Cockapoo named "Daisy" to Mary Kay on Friday.

"Oh boy!" said Mary Kay when she saw her puppy for the first time.

Kate Jackson, Vickie Rhodes and several others at Southeast's Healthpoint Rehab all chipped in their time and money to make it happen.

They got the idea a little over a month ago when they got some bad news from Mary Kay's mother, Tania Hale.

"She said Mary Kay's not doing too good today because she lost her service dog," said Rhodes.

Patterson sentenced to life in prison

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - The man found guilty of being the trigger man in a triple murder in Cape Girardeau was sentenced to life without parole Monday morning.

Jurors found Ryan Patterson guilty of three counts of 1st degree murder on August 4.

The three sentences shall be served consecutively.

Patterson is the gunman in the 2009 triple murder of Jamie Orman, her unborn baby, and 15-year-old son, Derrick.

Prosecutors say the sentences to be served one right after another send the message that Patterson will likely never walk the streets again.

In court, victims' family members got a chance read some remarks.

"This is the last picture I will ever have of my son," said Bruce Orman, Derrick's father. "Dead in his casket. It's appalling to me the system failed to put him to death and has failed to give us the gratification to watch him die."

Waller's attorney files motion to revoke order of detention

Clay Waller's federal defense attorney says there is nothing to show his client is either a danger to the community or a flight risk.

Scott Tilsen included these points in an motion filed Monday afternoon to revoke the detention order keeping Waller behind bars.

Last week, a federal judge ruled Waller should be kept in custody until he goes to trial on a federal indictment charging him with writing an internet threat directed against his sister-in-law who has custody of his three small children.

Tilsen argues Waller has strong ties to the community, no criminal history, and denies responsibility for the disappearance of his estranged wife Jacque.  Jacque Waller has been missing since June 1.

No word yet on if Tilsen's motion will be argued in court.
