Cape Girardeau city leaders mull urban deer hunt

The increasing deer population in Cape Girardeau has city officials taking another look at an urban deer hunt.

The high amount is why city council member John Voss wants to revisit the idea of a highly restricted program allowing bow hunting of does during the regular deer season.

"I've asked city staff to help coordinate with the Department of Conservation to identify where we might have specific problems in the community and how we would go about establishing a program to help remove some of these deer at a very responsible, very calculated and a predicted way," said John Voss, city council member.

Local business donates vitamins to promote healthy kids

Do you know what your kids eat? What nutrients they are getting each day?

"Well if you're a parent you know kids don't like to eat everything they're supposed to, sometimes it's rushed around with school and everything," said Pharmacist Christina Hart.

"The lowest cost food is not usually the most nutritional food you can get," said John McGowan a United Way representative.

Pharmacies like MediCenter in Jackson are filling a nutrition gap by donating free vitamins for kids between the ages of 5 and 12.

"At a young age they have a certain amount that they should be getting of each type of food, vegetables, fruits, meats, if they're not getting that certain amount at each meal, it's supplemented and they're getting them through vitamins and the vitamins have the minerals that they need as well," said South Elementary School Principal Jessica Maxwell.

Mixed reaction to new no parking spots just off Southeast Missouri State's campus

The City of Cape Girardeau passed an ordinance designating certain areas just off Southeast Missouri State's campus as No Parking, or Limited Parking.

"Terrible, terrible, almost 3-4 times a week I'd have to call the police," said Homeowner Tim Ruddy.

Roads just off campus used to be crowded with student parking. But now, many streets are bare with signs saying "no parking" or giving certain hours people can't park.

"It's just simply marvelous," said Ruddy. "It frees our drive, we don't have to call the police anymore, and cars aren't parked in front of our house for days on end. It's just marvelous."

Homeowners like Ruddy say they're thrilled with the new no parking ordinance.
