Report: Missouri roads, bridges among worst in U.S.

A new report shows that Missouri's rural roads and bridges are some of the worst in the nation. This is according to a national transportation research group.

The report found that more than 500 people died on rural Missouri roads,

Eighteen-percent of Missouri's rural bridges were rated structurally deficient, and 20-percent of rural roads are in poor condition.

An additional 11-percent of the state's rural bridges were functionally obsolete.

"The condition and safety of these roads and bridges is critically important to the hundreds of thousands of Missourians who live and make their living in the state's rural areas. While progress has been made, there is still much left to be done," said Doug Smith, president of the Associated General Contractors of Missouri. "There is a direct correlation between the condition and safety of the state's rural roads and the limited funding that MoDOT has available."

Mo. Gov. Nixon talks jobs at Cape Girardeau visit

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon stopped at Bio-Kyowa in Cape Girardeau late Thursday afternoon urging lawmakers to pass the made in Missouri jobs package.

The company is in the bio-chemical and pharmaceutical business.

Nixon says the jobs package will foster growth in science and technology industries expanding Missouri exports, along with passing a tax credit reform legislation to pay for additional investments.

Nixon hopes the general assembly will pass the measure when they meet on September 6.

Jackson boy 1 of 12 chosen for clinical trial

He's one of 12 boys in the country to be chosen for a clinical trial that could save his life. Eleven year old Justin Trovillion of Jackson has Duchenne, a form of Muscular Dystrophy.

"A lot of people if you are around him everyday you would not know it. He has big calf muscles, that's one sign," said his mother, Carrie Trovillion. "But he can run and he jumps in his own way."

Justin is lucky. He was diagnosed at age three.

"His crawling was off," said Carrie. "Doctors diagnosed him immediately."

Carrie explains a grant through the Muscular Dystrophy Association makes it possible for them to participate in the expensive trial.

"We go to Columbus Ohio for three days a week. MDA pays for everything for planes to food to hotels. Because of the people that donate to MDA locally, Justin's life will be saved," said Carrie with tears in her eyes.
