Red Cross asks for blood, platelets before ahead of Hurricane Irene

Red Cross asks for blood, platelets before ahead of Hurricane Irene

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - You can give platelets on Sunday, August 28 at the American Red Cross Cape Girardeau Blood Donation Center located at 20 South Mount Auburn Road.

The American Red Cross is urging donors to schedule appointments to give blood and especially blood platelets before Hurricane Irene makes landfall in the United States.

The Red Cross says platelets are the fragile cells that control bleeding and can be used by cancer patients and those undergoing chemotherapy.

“Since platelets have a shelf-life of just five days, it is imperative that there are enough platelets on hand prior to the storm to meet the needs of patients in affected areas,” says Tim Ryerson, CEO, Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region

Platelets are collected through a special process called pheresis. They are also one of three blood components extracted in the lab following your whole blood donation.

Man pleads guilty to stealing trailers, cutting into scrap metal

A Cape Girardeau man has pleaded guilty Friday to stealing trailers and cutting them into scrap.

Joel Keith Day, 57, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, pled guilty to three felony counts of interstate possession of Stolen Goods before US District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr.

With the plea, Day admitted that on Dec. 4, 2010, he stole an aluminum trailer and contents, with a value in excess of $5000, from a lot in Mount Vernon, Ill.

Around two weeks later, Day moved the trailer and contents to a storage building he had rented on Highway 25, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Day then had the trailer cut into pieces and sold as scrap metal.

On February 13, 2011, Day stole another trailer with a value in excess of $5000, from a lot in Anna, Ill.

Woman gets 15 years for conspiracy to commit murder

Judge William Syler hands down a maximum prison sentence Friday of 15 years for Michelle Lawrence.

Lawrence will soon move from a jail cell in Bollinger County to a prison cell.

Lawrence pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder back in June.

While the victim's family is pleased with the maximum punishment, it is far from what they consider justice.

"They were loved, and deeply missed," said Kelly Yates Hoffman. "We ask the court to render the maximum sentence allowed by law."

Weary from multiple court proceedings, Kelly Yates Hoffman gathers strength to face a woman she blames for the deaths of her loved ones.

Wearing purple, her sister Jamie Orman's favorite color, and a necklace with three hearts Hoffman speaks from the heart.

"It has shattered our whole family to lose three members in such a horrible way," said Hoffman.
