Welcome Back activities for Southeast students

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University will welcome back students for the start of the 2011-2012 school year with a weekend of activities August 18 through 20.

A schedule of activities for the weekend includes:

  • August 18 - Early Bird move-in for first year students will be from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center-North, regular check-in will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center-North
  • August 19 - Welcome Convocation at 10 a.m. in the Show Me Center
  • August 19 - Southeast 101 sessions - 10:45 a.m. at different campus locations
  • August 19 - College meetings - 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at different campus locations, gives students the opportunity to hear from the deans of their colleges
  • August 19 - Honor students can meet their colleagues at the Honors House from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • August 19 - Ice Cream Pig Out - 7 p.m.

Global Leadership Summit

Global Leadership Summit

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Global Leadership Summit will be held at La Croix Church in Cape Girardeau August 11 and 12.

The summit is ran by a not-for-profit Christian Organization known as the Willow Creek Association from the Chicago area and has been held annually since 1995.

According to the La Croix Church, they are expecting over 600 area leaders to attend this years event. It will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Man injured from gunfire inside SUV after trying to flee traffic stop

A man was injured from a gun firing inside an SUV after trying to flee a traffic stop in Cape Girardeau early Saturday morning.

It happened around 1:35 a.m. on North Sprigg St.

According to Cape Girardeau Police, officers were called to Rhodes 101 on N. Sprigg for a report of a fight in progress.

While officers were en route a second call was made of shots fired at the same location.

Southeast Mo. State University Police arrived and reported the suspect SUV as a gray Jeep that left the scene on N. Sprigg St.

Officers found the SUV at Village on the Green, made a traffic stop and arrested a 21-year-old man.

Police say a passenger in the SUV then jumped into the driver's seat and hit a Southeast police vehicle after trying to leave the scene.

Head-on crash injures 2 firefighters late Saturday morning

Three people were injured, including 2 firefighters, in a crash late Saturday morning in Cape Girardeau.

It happened on Kent St. near Lexington around 11 a.m., according to Officer Dan Seger and  Fire Capt. Paul Breitensten.

Two firefighters were injured in one car. The passenger is a Cape Girardeau city and county firefighter. His son, the driver of a Honda Civic, also is a county firefighter.

Also injured was the passenger in another vehicle, a Jeep Liberty.

Police say they all received moderate injuries and were taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The head-on crash occurred as the driver of the Honda was going north on Kent St. as the Jeep Liberty was headed south. The SUV then crossed the line, slammed on their brakes and hit the Civic on the front drivers side.

McCaskill to tour Mo. manufacturing centers

McCaskill to tour Mo. manufacturing centers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Mo. Sen. Claire McCaskill is scheduled to kick off a manufacturing jobs tour.

She is scheduled to visit industry in Perryville, Jackson and Sikeston on Monday, Aug. 8.

McCaskill will tour Sabereline, Proctor and Gamble and Alan Wire Company with owners, managers and employees.

According to a press release, the senator is looking for new ways to support local businesses and encourage job growth creation.

Music discovery event at St. Paul Lutheran

Music discovery event at St. Paul Lutheran

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - The Young Musicians Partnership Scholarship Fund will sponsor a music discovery event on Saturday, August 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will be a chance for third through 12th grade students to try out different musical instruments and make their own music.

No musical abilities are necessary and sessions will be taught by local faculty.

Registration is limited to 100 students and the fee is $5.

St. Paul Lutheran Church is located at 223 West Adams Street in Jackson, Mo.
