Roads buckling in Cape Girardeau County

The excessive heat is starting to take a toll on Heartland roads.

The road has buckled near the First Missouri State Bank near the intersection of Mt. Auburn and Independence streets in Cape Girardeau.

Crews put out cones so no one drives onto the damaged road.

And, this isn't the only report of roads buckling.

Windekind Road in Jackson also has had some buckling.

Crews are working to fix both of them.

Old federal courthouse bidding to close soon

The clock is ticking as the U.S. government tries to find a buyer for the old federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau.

According to the General Services Administration's auction website bidding will close on August 2.

The highest bid of just two entered $151,601 has stood since May 30.

Cape county leaders say they still have some interest in the building.

City Manager Scott Meyer says he hopes the county bids as the city may want to talk about using a portion of it.

OVC honors Southeast student-athletes

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Ohio Valley Conference has released their 2010-11 school year awards and a total of 131 Southeast Missouri student-athletes OVC-best five teams honored.

Nineteen of the 131 student-athletes were presented with the OVC Medal of Honor, which is reserved for those who achieve the highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport.

The Redhawk baseball, women's basketball, men's cross country, football and men's track and field teams earned Team Academic Achievement Awards.

Nominate someone you know for the Mo. Older Worker of the Year contest

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The state of Missouri is looking for your nominations for their annual Older Worker of the Year contest.

The contest looks to honor a Missouri resident who is 60 or older, employed at least 20 hours a week and shows dependability and new skills on the job.

The winner and regional finalists will be recognized at a two-day awards ceremony in Jefferson City, Mo. in November.

"Older workers play a vital role in our economy," said Margaret Donnelly, director of the Department of Health and Senior Services, which is helping to sponsor the contest.  "They're highly valued for qualities such as judgment, commitment to quality, attendance and punctuality. Companies who recruit mature workers can attract top talent in a changing workforce."

The Older Worker of the Year for 2010 was Nina George, a teacher's aide for 44 years.

Support continues for Waller's triplets

The Heartland continues to show support for the Waller children.

At Stooges Restaurant in Jackson, Wednesday was "It's Jacque Waller Day."

All day long 10-percent of proceeds went to Waller's triplets. The owner and patrons say it's the least they can do. 

"It's just something that as a member of this community it's had a major impact," said Ted Clark, Owner of Stooge's Restaurant.  "It's a horrible tragedy and I hope everything turns out ok."

Many of the patrons never met Jacque Waller or her family but felt compelled to help.

"It's a tough situation and our hearts hurt for these kids because there's so much uncertainty," said Deb Martin of Jackson.

Trail of Tears State Park beach reopens

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The swimming beach at Trail of Tears State Park reopened Wednesday after water samples taken Monday showed bacteria levels were below the department's acceptable levels for state park beaches.

The water at all designated beaches in the state park system is sampled weekly during the recreational season by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to determine if it's suitable for swimming.

The DNR says water quality can be determined unsuitable based on either the single sample taken earlier in the week or by the geometric mean, which is the mathematical value that takes into consideration results from the current week plus results taken during previous weeks.

The sample test results show a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not give an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located.

SEBA wins district tournament

SEBA wins district tournament

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Baseball Association All-Start baseball team won their district tournament recently and will be traveling to Junior Babe Ruth State Tournament on July 28.

The team is made up of 14-year-old boys from Jackson, Mo.; Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and Olive Branch, Ill.

They took first place in the tournament last weekend in East Prairie over SEMO North.

According to Shelly Henson who sent us the team picture to cNews, the boys keep saying they want to go all the way.
