MoDOT: Approved construction program cut in half

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, a new state five-year highway construction program was approved Wednesday, but the program is only half the size of recent years.

The new program is about $600 million a year rather than the average of $1.2 billion and MoDOT says Missourians will be seeing very few new projects during the next few years.

"We've known this grim situation was coming," said Kevin Keith, Missouri Department of Transportation director, "We have fallen off a cliff."

Keith said the sharp decline in funds means the investment that supported Missouri jobs, improved roads and bridges and increased safety is in jeopardy.

Jacque Waller's personal property found

A stack of Jacque Waller's business cards could turn out to be a key piece of evidence for investigators.

Investigators and several others said a woman spotted the cards on the ground in front of a row of mailboxes earlier this week.  "They walked out to the mailbox, happened to look down and see it there," said Wilma Kallbrier, who lives on Lindsey Lane, right off Highway 177 near Proctor & Gamble.

"They (the business cards) were in a standard business card packet or holder that would be carried in someone's brief case or purse," said Cape Girardeau County Lt. David James.

Kallbrier said she's been to those mailboxes countless times since June 1, the last time anyone saw Jacque Waller.  "It had to have been (placed there) recent," said Kallbrier.

Ameren: Hot weather led to Cape Girardeau outage

Ameren Missouri says hot weather led to Tuesday's power outage in Cape Girardeau.

Spokesperson Jean Mason says the heat melted a portion of a wire along the 700 block of Mount Auburn late in the afternoon, causing it to break.

Mason says things like this are pretty common, and can happen year-round.

Mason says an electrical overload also contributed to the break, with so many people running their air conditioners at once, and at full-blast.

Around 1,600 people had no power for several hours Tuesday in the heat.

Work crews had everything up and running again in a few hours.
