A little hot for a picnic, but swimming would be a nice way to stay cool in this heat wave.

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder committed to vets homes

Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder met with veterans and staff at the Cape Girardeau Veterans Home on Monday amid budget concerns.

Kinder addressed a swirling rumor that the home could close due to state budget cuts.

However, Kinder said it's just a rumor, and there are no plans to close any of the state's seven veterans homes.

He said this despite Missouri's revenue dropping 20 percent since 2008.

Kinder said revenue levels will not be back at 2008 levels until 2014.

"That's the biggest issue facing our veterans," Kinder said. "But there will be no closures or staff reductions at our veterans homes if I have anything to say about it."

Kinder also said he hopes substantial raises can be given to staff members after they've gone three years without raises.

Firefighters secure adrift boat twice on Mississippi River

Cape Girardeau firefighters take to the river not once, but twice, to catch the same stranded boat.

Marine One back on the Mississippi River Monday afternoon, working to secure a pleasure boat that ran out of gas in Ste. Genevieve and drifted down to Cape.

It's the same boat the department had to catch Monday morning for the same reason.

The first time, the 30-foot pleasure craft made it about 20 miles south of Cape before they caught it.

The Coast Guard requested Cape Girardeau Fire Department's help around 3:30 Monday morning by using their Marine one rescue boat.

There was no medical emergency on the adrift boat.
