One block of Broadway could be added to National Register of Historic Places

The 400 block of Broadway could soon be on the National Register of Historic Places.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- The 400 block of Broadway could soon be on the National Register of Historic Places.

A state advisory board will vote on the matter Friday.

Dr. Steven Hoffman at Southeast Missouri State University is leading the charge to get the block added to the register.

The 500 block of Broadway, along with several other parts of Old Town Cape, are already listed.

Dr. Hoffman says he feels confident the application will be approved on Friday.

"After they approve it, then it will be sent to the keeper of the National Register in Washington D.C. and once it's approved at that level, then it will be formally listed on the actual register," Hoffman said.

Business owners will benefit from the registration.

Diet makeovers begin with a clean pantry, fridge

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- If you want to make over your body from the inside out, dieticians and doctors agree you might want to start with your pantry.

We spoke with a woman who kept the weight off for three years by making that part of her plan. With her advice, and the help of a dietician, we show you how and talk about some of the newest foods you should try.

Laurie Schneider's life is whole lot different now than it was a few years ago. That's when she decided to take charge of her health; and dropped 50 pounds.

She said joining Healthpoint Fitness and learning to love exercise was only part of her transformation. She needed guidance to give her diet a complete makeover from pantry to fridge.

Registered Dietician Raina Childers said what we saw, isn't what Laurie's pantry used to look like.

Laurie admits it used to look this: bar b que potato chips, white rice and pasta, high-sugar cereal and probably some cookies.

How you can help authorities with a missing person case

Officer Darin Hickey with the Cape Girardeau Police Department says you should always look for suspicious things or things that just don't look right.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- With three women trapped more than a decade, many believe they could have been rescued sooner. There have been reports of a woman seen crawling naked other reports of people hearing people banging on windows and doors.

That got us wondering, how well do you know your neighbors and what can you do to help?

Officer Darin Hickey with the Cape Girardeau Police Department says you should always look for suspicious things or things that just don't look right. He says one of the best things you can do is set up a neighborhood watch.

Hickey says it brings the whole neighborhood closer and gives everyone an understanding that everyone is looking after each other and if need monitoring each other.

"Anything that makes the neighborhood safer helps the police department because we can't be everywhere at once," Officer Hickey said. "We want to be and wish we could be, but we can't."
