Art exhibit featured through May at Cape Girardeau library

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Local photographer and KFVS12 weatherman Brian Alworth will have an art exhibit hanging in the Geraldine Hirsch Gallery at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

The exhibit runs throughout the month of May. It is free and open to the public during normal operating hours of the library.

Southeast theatre and dance students to hold Senior Showcase at River Campus

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University will hold its annual Senior Showcase.

According to the university, it's a cabaret for graduating seniors, at 7:30 p.m. May 4 and 2 p.m. May 5 in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre at the River Campus.

“We are thrilled to be presenting our 4th Annual Cape Girardeau Showcase and our 3rd Annual New York City Showcase,” said Dr. Kenneth Stilson, professor of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast. “We have such a talented group of seniors this year. We’re so proud of their accomplishments, and we hope to see all our community supporters at the terrific show these students have put together.”

A reception will follow both performances in the John and Betty Glenn Convocation Center.

Cape Riverfront Market to begin May 4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – Old Town Cape will begin the second season of the Cape Riverfront Market on Saturday, May 4 at 8 a.m.

The open air market will run Saturday mornings, May 4 through October 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot at 35 S. Spanish, across from Bel-Air Grill and Grass Roots BMW.

The lot will be closed to vehicles from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday to accommodate the event.

The market will include more than 30 vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, nuts, honey, maple syrup, jams, breads, baked goods, coffee and a variety of arts and crafts. All products are locally grown or produced. The event will also include weekly demonstrations and entertainment as well as a sitting area for patrons. SNAP/EBT cards will be accepted for qualifying food at the market tent.

Jackson author debuts first book on April 1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Jackson, Mo. blogger, Matt Gordon, will release a collection of humorous essays in his debut volume, “The Monkeys of God.”

To commemorate the release, The West Bank Bistro will be hosting a book launch party on Friday, April 5. Gordon will be selling and signing copies from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. All ages are welcome.

Admission is free and books will be on sale for $9.99 for those interested.

Gordon, a Jackson native, has been an avid writer from the time he could hold a pencil. After pursuing a degree in English from Hannibal-LaGrange University, Gordon continued to steadily add to his repertoire by posting works to his blog aptly named “The Matt Gordon: A Place for Words.”

Saturday Social: Turning Art into Jpegs April 20

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Arts Council invites you to attend a Saturday Social on April 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will feature Peter Nguyen and Nick Toebaas as they discuss documenting artwork with photography and putting together portfolio submissions for juried exhibitions.

Nguyen is the Director of the Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University.

Toebaas is the Office Manager at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and is an Adjunct Instructor in the Art Department at Southeast Missouri State University. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Topics that will be discussed include cameras, setup and lighting, both professional setups and do-it-yourself. Also discussed will be image file formatting and preparing images for submission to professional juried art competitions.
