CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a Contra Dance on Friday, January 25.

The dance will be at the Episcopal Church at 101 North Fountain Street. A free beginner's session will be from 6:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the dance to live music will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The featured band will be The Old Cornlickers.

2013 Great Race to stop in Cape Girardeau on June 25

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)  - Cape Girardeau, Mo., will host an overnight stop on the 2013 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Tuesday, June 25, race promoters have announced.

The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, is expected to bring up to 100 antique automobiles downtown to Main Street for this event. 

The race will start June 22 in St. Paul, Minn., at the State Fairgrounds and weave its way down the Mississippi River toward the Gulf of Mexico through 10 states and cross the river a dozen times before the finish in Mobile, Ala., on June 30. 

The stop in Cape Girardeau will be the last on Day 4 of the 9-day race.

All but one of the overnight stops will be on the Mississippi River.

The cars will arrive from a lunch stop in Washington, Mo., earlier in the day.

The Great Race, which began 30 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri recently received a sponsorship in the amount of $3,000 from the Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation for use with the Artist-Residency project slated for Spring 2013 at the Alternative Education Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The sponsorship will help in continuing the mission and development of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri by enabling the organization to match a $10,000 grant received by the National Endowment for the Arts in August 2012 for an artist-residency program hosted in conjunction with classes offered at the Alternative Education Center. This program is slated to begin in January 2013, and will feature three different artists across a variety of disciplines for week-long residencies at the school during the spring semester.

FRUITLAND, MO (KFVS) - The Bootheel Bluegrass Festival will be January 24, 25 and 26 at Bavarian Halle in Fruitland.

The  Bavarian Halle is located by Drury Inn, just take Exit 105 on I-55. A schedule of performances include:

Thursday - Show time is 7 p.m. and admission for the day is $7.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will hold a Contra Dance on Saturday, January 12.

The dance will be at the Christ Episcopal Church, located at 101 North Fountain Street in Cape Girardeau, Mo. It will be from 6:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a free beginner's session and from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the live dance.

The band will be Banjovi and everyone is welcome to attend.

Extravaganza Jan. 26 to benefit Department of Theatre and Dance students

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Department of Theatre and Dance and Southeast Missouri State University will host their Extravaganza Saturday, January 26 at the River Campus.

The Extravaganza begins with a 5 p.m. social, followed by 6 p.m. musical performances all in the atrium of the River Campus. Backstage tours, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will also be available.

Funds raised will benefit the Senior Showcase, to be held in the spring. The Showcase is a way to professionally promote seniors who have completed a degree in performing arts.

38th annual high school art show, silent auction at Sikeston Depot Museum

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - The 38th Annual Regional High School Student Art Show will be Tuesday, January 8 at the Sikeston Depot Museum.

Twelve high schools are expected to participate in the art show.

January also brings two opportunities to participate in a very special silent auction for wonderful art pieces created for the "Band of Artists" exhibit held last Spring. These special wooden cutouts of musical instruments were turned into beautiful and fascinating works of art by students and teachers from Sikeston, Dexter, Notre Dame,  East Prairie, Poplar Bluff, New Madrid County Central and Charleston high schools. Proceeds from the auction will be split between the Depot and the high school art department which created the piece.

Bids will be taken during the Friday, Jan. 11, Downtown Gallery Walk (5-7:30 p.m.), and the Sunday, Jan. 20, awards reception (2-4 p.m.) for the Regional High School Student Art Show.
