Chamber choir to perform concert in honor of former director

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University's Chamber Choir, Cantus Choralis, will pay tribune to the late Dr. Gary Miller on April 12.

Dr. Miller was a former director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. The concert will be at 7 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall.

Steven Hendricks, who directs the Cantus Choralis, urges concert goers to note the event has been moved up 30 minutes from the originally published start time.

The Cantus Choralis will perform “In Memoriam,” a piece composed by Robert Fruehwald, Southeast professor of music, to honor Miller. The choir also will perform music from the Renaissance by John Wilbye and Elway Bevin, along with contemporary pieces.

Guest artists will include the Southeast Missouri Music Academy’s Suzuki Strings directed by Hays Hendricks, soprano Mary Mims and harpsichordist Sarah Hoffmeister.

Jackson native to hold book launch party, presentation

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - Jackson/Cape Girardeau native Marvelless Mark Kemp will host a book launch party for his first book on Tuesday, April 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Opportunity Rocks!" is a book that shares secrets to being a "rock star" in business and life, and the seven chords to master in order to make the most of one's talents, set goals, manage change and motivate people.

Kamp will also present a mini-motivational presentation. He is an award-winning motivational speaker, professional emcee and entertainer, who travels nationally on the speaking circuit.

The event will be at Kimbeland Country Club, 2175 E. Jackson Blvd.

Visual Arts Cooperative's 10th Annual Show scheduled

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host their First Friday reception featuring the Visual Arts Cooperative's 10th Annual Show on Friday, April 6.

The reception will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the arts council, 32 N. Main Street in Cape Girardeau. It will feature works by the 51 members of the Visual Arts Cooperative, and will be on display throughout April.

You can register your child for Summer Day Camp sessions

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Fitness Plus at Saint Francis Medical Center is offering 12 Summer Day Camp session for children ages 6-12.

The weekly camps run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting May 21 and ending August 10. The summer camp theme is "Time Travelers." Organizers say each week, campers will "visit" a different era in time and activities will be planned according to each era.

Registration for Fitness Plus members start Friday, April 2 and non member registration starts Friday, April 16.

For parents’ convenience, Kids Plus childcare services are available after camp until 5:30 p.m. Families will receive a discount for multiple children, and bundle prices are available in three-week increments.

All camp sessions have limited space, so parents are advised to register early to ensure their child’s spot.

Busch Stadium organist to perform at River Campus

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The organist for the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Dwayne Hilton, will perform and speak March 17 at a Music Academy Event.

The fundraising event is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Hilton will perform and speak at 2 p.m.

All money raised will go toward the purchase of a new piano for the Department of Music at the River Campus. The new instrument will be placed in a classroom in the department for the benefit of the university music students.They say the new piano will also fill a need for higher quality performance instruments for students participating in the National Federation's Junior Music Festival.

Two guitar concerts to benefit Martha and Mary Project

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - An international guitar champion will perform two concerts; one on Tuesday, March 20 at the Baptist Student Center at 7 p.m., the other at First Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Both concerts will be free, but donations will be accepted. They will benefit the Martha and Mary Project.

Acoustic guitarist Mark Kroos recently took first place in Guitar Player Magazine's 2011 International Guitar Superstar Competition in Nashville, Tenn. He and five other competitors each performed one original composition in front of renown guitar judges Muriel Anderson, Reeves Grabrels, Carl Verheyen and host Larry Carlton. Kroos won with his piece titled "Flight Attempt."

The goal is to raise the minimum to begin part of the project by the first of the summer.

Alumni students to perform benefit concert for scholarship fund

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Former members of the Southeast Wind Ensemble will perform a concert of wind band literature on Saturday, March 10.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus. Admission is free for the concert, but the group is accepting donations toward the newly-formed University Bands Alumni Scholarship Fund.

The group will be conducted by Dr. Robert M. Gifford, former director of bands for the university, and Guest Conductor Dr. Martin Reynolds, the current director of bands for Southeast.

A reception will immediately follow the end of the concert for anyone who would like to mingle with the alumni performers.
