96-year-old Cape Girardeau business to close its doors

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - It’s the end of an era for Lang Jewelry and Fine Gifts.

Owners Roger and Judith Anne Lang have announced they will retire this fall and close the store in Old Town Cape after 96 years in business.

The Lang's say the jewelry store has been in the family since 1916 at the same location at 126 North Main in downtown Cape Girardeau.

“While we will certainly enjoy our retirement, we will miss seeing our loyal customers and the familiarity of going to work in historic Old Town Cape each day," said Richard Lang, third generation owner.  "It has been an honor and a privilege for the Lang family to serve the area for the past 96 years.”

Lang Jewelry and Fine Gifts will be closed to the public from September 8-16 to host private shopping events.

The Langs plan to close their doors forever this fall once all inventory and fixtures are sold.

Scooters on the rise in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Scooters are now on many Southeast Missouri State University students back-to-school lists.

Todd Rapp is owner of Campus Scooter. Over the past three years, his small business continues to grow. His first year, Rapp sold 100 scooters. In year two, he sold about 300 scooters. This year, he's already sold more 500 and can't keep any in stock right now.

"We sold everything single bike that ran out of our store," Rapp said

But, why the scooter rush?

"I filled up today," Nathan Geile said. "It cost me $3.25 to fill up."

"This one, I get close to between 80 and 100 miles to the gallon," Max Nutt said.

According to Missouri law, the only thing needed to operate a scooter under 50 CC is a Missouri license. No helmet or insurance is needed.

Cathy Fowler is an insurance agent in town. She says there is a common misconception that scooter insurance is expensive.
