Businesses closing in Cape Girardeau, not necessarily negative outlook

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-

If you've seen a few places in the Cape Girardeau area closing their doors, you're not alone.

John Mehner, the President and CEO of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, says a lot of times businesses will get through the holiday season, and then assess if they can stay open.

Unfortunately for some, the answer is no, and so now is the time to close.

In Cape Girardeau, places like Talbot's, a local salon, and Mollie's Restaurant have all already closed their doors for good.

The Keg Shop on Independence is in the process of selling the last inventory, and then it too will go to the chopping block. Owner Charolette Meador says there's not enough sales for the amount of overhead.

Silver Eclipse on Broadway has only been open for seven months, but is also going out of business.

Mehner says closings are bad for those businesses, but not necessarily for the entire Cape economy.
