Nominating petitions available Dec. 5 for Cape Girardeau City Council Ward 6 position | Community Spirit
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The City of Cape Girardeau says potential candidates for the vacated Cape Girardeau City Council Ward 6 position will soon start circulating their nomination petitions for the April ballot.
The city says forms will be available Wednesday, Dec. 5.
Council member Kathy Swan of Ward 6 submitted her resignation from the City Council due to her election to the Missouri House of Representatives, District 147. The resignation is effective Jan. 9, 2013. Swan served on the City Council since April 2010.
Persons eligible to serve on the City Council must be a registered voter in Cape Girardeau, at least 21 years of age, a resident of the city for at least two years immediately prior to the election, and a resident of Ward 6 for at least 90 days prior to Dec. 18, 2012.
Potential candidates must be nominated by a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters who are eligible to vote for the proposed candidate. In the case of City Council members, the petition signers must be registered to vote in the individual ward from which the candidate seeks election. Nominating petitions will be available beginning Dec. 5 in the City Manager’s Office, located at City Hall, 401 Independence.
Nominated candidates may file between Dec. 18 and Jan. 15. Both the nominating petition and the acceptance of nomination form must be returned to the City Clerk at the City Manager’s Office.
According to the city, if more than two candidates file for any one ward or city-wide, a primary election will be held on April 2, 2013,with the general election on Aug. 6, 2013. If two or fewer candidates file for the office, the general election will be held April 2, 2013.
