American Red Cross sponsors earthquake awareness event

American Red Cross sponsors earthquake awareness event

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – A little more than 200 years after the great New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812, a special awareness event is coming to Cape Girardeau that will help citizens learn about the earthquakes and how to survive it.

The earthquake awareness event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. at the West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau.

The American Red Cross is partnering with federal, state, and local officials for this event.

There will be display tables set up in the mall with information about earthquakes, along with general safety information.

They’ll be distributing information for visitors to take with them, have interactive displays, and answer questions from the public.

Although no one can predict future earthquakes, scientists say it’s only a matter of time before another major quake strikes the area.
