'Out of the Darkness' walk raises $14,000 for suicide prevention | Events
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Hundreds of people walked Saturday to support those who have been affected by a suicidal death in their family.
The 3rd Annual Cape Girardeau chapter AFSP "Out of the Darkness Walk" was held Saturday at Cape County Park.
Hundreds came out to support dozens of immediate family loved ones and many others that have been affected by suicide.
Supporters walked around the lake holding signs and remembering loved ones in support of awareness to help others in need and prevent future suicide attempts.
Over $14,000 was raised this year in which money goes back into services and organizations to help those in need here in Southeast Missouri.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, it is estimated that close to 1 million Americans attempt suicide and more that 38,000 die by suicide every year.
That rounds out to one death every 13.7 minutes. Ninety percent of those who die by suicide had a diagnosable mental illness at the time of their death.
