CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team will honor breast cancer survivors during their match against Austin Peay State University on Friday, October 5.
The game will be at 6:30 p.m. in Houck Field House. Between the second and third sets, survivors will receive pink volleyballs honoring their journeys.
The Redhawks volleyball team has been part of the local fight against breast cancer since 2000, when former Southeast women's volleyball coach Cindy Gannon founded Dig for Life to help other women fight this disease after her mother lost her fight.
Sponsored by Saint Francis Medical Center, Southeast Athletics and private donors, Dig for Life provides mammograms to area women who otherwise would not receive the screenings.
To raise awareness, the volleyball team wears pink jerseys at all of their October home matches and secures pledges throughout the month.
