35th Annual High School Art Exhibition to be displayed at River Campus

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The 35th annual high school art exhibition, "Exhibiting Excellence,” will be on display Feb. 10 through March 10 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus.

The university says "Exhibiting Excellence” showcases the talents of junior and senior high school students within a 100-mile radius of the southeast Missouri region.

An opening reception will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 10. Awards in sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, photography, fibers, drawing, painting, the Art Academy and Best of Show will be presented at 3 p.m. The Art Academy Award will be given to a junior for outstanding work; this junior will receive a scholarship to attend one of the University's summer Art Academy workshops. The Best of Show recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Southeast as an art major.

This year's juror will be Barbara Bickel, assistant professor of art education at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where she teaches courses in art education and drawing.

Bickel is also an artist, researcher and independent curator. Her art and performance rituals have been exhibited and performed in Canada since 1991. Her articles on arts-based inquiry and a/r/tography have been published in numerous journals and book chapters.

Bickel received her doctorate in art education from the University of British Columbia in Canada, where her arts-based research focused on women, ritual and spiritual leadership in multi-faith contexts, collaboration, and restorative and transformative learning. She completed an arts-based Master of Arts in Education at the University of British Columbia, where she inquired into the body as a site of knowing – performing itself as text. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Calgary in Canada and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Art History from the University of Alberta in Canada.

The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
