School Board honors Cape art students

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - For the second year in a row a Cape Public Schools student has been awarded “Best in Show” at Southeast Missouri State University’s High School Art Exhibition.

In addition, twelve other Cape Public Schools District students won awards ranging from 1st Place to Honorable mention, and seven other students’ works were selected for exhibition.

1st Annual 5K 'Cupcake Challenge' held in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The First annual 2013 5K Cupcake Challenge kicked off in Cape Girardeau today with over 100 participants.

Runners raced around Arena Park and even stopped to have a cupcake or two.

Organizers felt to include cupcakes as part of the course to make it fun and friendly.

With each participant that stuffed their mouth with a cupcake, time was taken off of their total run.

This race benefits the Hope Children's Home.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - An Evening of Storytelling with Regina Carpenter and Jim May on Friday, May 17 marks a new chapter in storytelling events in Cape Girardeau.

Three one-day storytelling events are now offered throughout the year, and the new format gets kudos from nationally renowned storyteller Regina Carpenter.

“The format allows audiences to enjoy an unforgettable evening of wonderful stories with their community members,” Carpenter said.

Audiences will now be able to journey away and come back again in just one evening with the best storytellers the country has to offer. In this concentrated time, we get to experience the powerful connection story can bring to our community and family.”

Community health needs assessment released for some Mo. counties

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saint Francis Healthcare System, in collaboration with SoutheastHEALTH, has completed a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment for four Southeast Missouri counties.

The assessments of Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Scott and Stoddard Counties are now available to the public through the Saint Francis Medical Center website, www.sfmc.net.

The year-long CHNA process gathered a broad range of information through existing data, individual surveys and focus groups. Individual surveys and focus groups involved the underserved, the underinsured, at-risk populations, families and the elderly.

Cape Girardeau businesses asked to host parties for 'Great Race'

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau is asking businesses to host pit stop and welcome parties to help the city win the hospitality sward for the Great Race 2013.

Businesses along the race route from Kingshighway to Broadway are invited to host parties celebrating the arrival of over 100 racers to the Cape Girardeau area on Tuesday, June 25. 

According to the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pit Stop Parties will be judged on visibility (signage, balloons),  originality and creativity.

The winning business will receive the Pit Stop Party Spirit Award to be displayed in their store.

Businesses and organizations in the Riverfront District  from Water, Main and Spanish Streets are also encouraged to take part in the Great Race celebration with welcome parties.

Businesses will be judged on extended hours, special deals or sales and visibility of the celebration.
