Cape Girardeau businesses asked to host parties for 'Great Race'

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau is asking businesses to host pit stop and welcome parties to help the city win the hospitality sward for the Great Race 2013.

Businesses along the race route from Kingshighway to Broadway are invited to host parties celebrating the arrival of over 100 racers to the Cape Girardeau area on Tuesday, June 25. 

According to the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pit Stop Parties will be judged on visibility (signage, balloons),  originality and creativity.

The winning business will receive the Pit Stop Party Spirit Award to be displayed in their store.

Businesses and organizations in the Riverfront District  from Water, Main and Spanish Streets are also encouraged to take part in the Great Race celebration with welcome parties.

Businesses will be judged on extended hours, special deals or sales and visibility of the celebration.

Cape Riverfront Market to open May 4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Riverfront Market will run on Saturday mornings from May 4 through October 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot at 35 S. Spanish.

The lot will be closed every Saturday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate the event.

The market will include over 30 vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, nuts, honey, maple syrup, jams, breads, baked goods, coffee and a variety of arts and crafts.

Cape Girardeau assisted living center recognized for outstanding resident care

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A Cape Girardeau assisted and independent living community was recently recognized at the company's 32nd annual meeting in Kansas City, Mo.

Capetown Assisted and Independent Living by Americare was recently recognized for outstanding resident care (employee relations, community relations, business operations).

Capetown met very stringent criteria in order to be considered for the award including (for resident care: annual state survey results and internal quality assurance audit results, for employee relations: annual employee satisfaction survey results and low annual turnover rates, for community relations: customer satisfaction results and customer service training compliance, for business operations: community census results and budget compliance results).

Cape Girardeau jr. high students take awards at History Day Competition

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Thirty-three Cape Central Junior High School students competed in the regional National History Day event at Southeast Missouri State University in March, and nine students went on to compete at the State level.

Katherine Carns, Claudia Price and Alicia Stull are pictured wearing the medals earned at State Competition at University of Missouri-Columbia for their website about the Black Plague. The trio took 1st Place at Regional Competition and placed 3rd at State. 

Other students who competed at State, and their Regional awards, are Justin Tuschhoff: 1st Place, individual website; Carson Retter: 2nd Place, individual website; Madison Dush, Bennett Kidd, Katie Kinder and Levi Strickland: 3rd Place, group website.

Old Town Cape kicks off spring Tunes at Twilight series with Donna Herula

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The spring series of Old Town Cape’s Tunes at Twilight starts Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. with Donna Herula.

Herula is a singer-songwriter in the Blues genre. She has been influenced by slide guitar players Johnny Winter, Rory Block and Eric Sardinas. She was a semifinalist in the 2012 Yamaha Six String Theory international guitar competition and placed in the top six of the blues guitarist category among contestants from 58 countries.

MoDOT reminds drivers to watch for motorcycles

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation encourages motorcyclists and motorists to safely “share the road” this May in observation of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

All motorists are reminded to watch for motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe, while motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists. According to MoDOT, there were 276 motorcyclists killed from 2010-2012.

“We’re seeing more and more motorcycles on the highways,” said Leanna Depue, chair of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety’s executive committee. “Drivers of all vehicles need to be extra attentive. A motorcycle is one of the smallest vehicles on our roads, often hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot. Everyone needs to watch for motorcycles.”

Cape Girardeau properties to be considered for National Register May 10

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places during its quarterly meeting on Friday, May 10.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. in the LaCharrette conference room of the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, located at 1101 Riverside Dr. in Jefferson City.

Seven nominations are scheduled to be considered for listing in the National Register. Properties on the agenda include historic commercial properties and districts and residential buildings. Also under consideration is a historic context study for distribution resources in St. Louis. Approximately 35 historic building are represented in the nominations. The nominated properties and historic context under consideration are listed below:
