2nd Annual Wheeled Wonders Fun Fest

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Discovery Playhouse will host their 2nd Annual Wheeled Wonders Fun Fest on Saturday June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the old Steve and Barry’s Parking Lot at West Park Mall.

Wheeled Wonders Fun Fest is an opportunity for children of all ages to watch, explore, honk horns and climb in various occupational vehicles while meeting the experts that operate them. It will provide children with a greater understanding of important career fields, specifically engineering.

Discovery Playhouse says this is a great chance to reach the families, from all over our region, while having fun. Last year’s event was a great success and we anticipate a better turn out this year.

MOMOM to provide dental clinic with free oral healthcare May 3-4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Mission of Mercy will host a large-scale dental clinic May 3-4 at the Show Me Center.

The clinic will provide free oral healthcare to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford care. Doors open at 5 a.m.

Organizers say you can arrive early as the clinic is first come, first serve until they reach capacity. It is open to both adults and children, but no child care will be available.

MOMOM says to expect a long day. Dental services offered will include cleanings, fillings and extractions. They say they will not provide crowns, bridges or dentures.

Old Town Cape kicks off spring Tunes at Twilight series with Donna Herula

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The spring series of Old Town Cape’s Tunes at Twilight starts Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. with Donna Herula.

Herula is a singer-songwriter in the Blues genre. She has been influenced by slide guitar players Johnny Winter, Rory Block and Eric Sardinas. She was a semifinalist in the 2012 Yamaha Six String Theory international guitar competition and placed in the top six of the blues guitarist category among contestants from 58 countries.

New monkeys featured at Lazy L Safari Park

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Lazy L Safari Park will feature some new primates this summer.

In addition to the Ring-tailed Lemurs, Diana Monkeys, Patas Monkeys, and Ruffed Lemurs (black & white) now call Monkey Row home.

The Diana Monkey is an Old World Monkey found in West Africa. 

Patas Monkeys are a ground-dwelling monkey distributed over semi-arid areas of West Africa and into East Africa. 

Black & White Ruffed Lemurs are primates and the largest of the lemurs.  

Zoo Director Vicki Lantz says they try to bring a new exhibit each year. They got the monkeys on loan from other private zoos.

In addition to the new Monkey Row, the alligators got a new pool added to their enclosure.

Lazy L Safari Park is a walk-thru zoo featuring animals from antelope to zebras. 

Visitors can get up close and personal with more than 40 different species of exotic animals. 

Put-put golf tournament to benefit

Put-put golf tournament to benefit

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - There will be a put-put golf tournament on April 27 at Arena Golf in Cape Girardeau to benefit Life Skills Touchpoint Autism Services.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. Ages four and up are invited to compete.

The entry fee is $10 and includes a snack and a drink.

Medals will be awarded for first through third place in each age group.

Southeast celebrates "Week of the Young Child"

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University's School For Young Children is celebrating the "Week of the Young Child."

Each day this week they have had an event to honor all of the little people they work with on a daily basis.

'Messy Morning' at the Show Me Center

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - More than 1,000 people showed up at the Show-Me-Center Saturday for the 6th Annual Messy Morning. This event features over 30 different activities to support the development of the young child.

The event has been put together to promote the importance play activities in the overall development of our youth and gives parents and caregivers ideas they can implement at home.

This year will benefit from the additional support of the Autism Center and related programs.

Some of the activities planned include face painting, small animals to see and pet, planting seedlings, blow painting, hand/foot print painting, music together classes, clean car wash, rainbow slime, bubble art, etc.

Canned food items were contributed to the Southeast Missouri Food Bank in lieu of admission.
