Vote for Cape Girardeau Main Street to be painted in 'Main Street Matters' program

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Old Town Cape to participate in "Main Street Matters" program, vote online for Cape Girardeau Main Street.

Benjamin Moore believes that Main Street is the foundation for thriving communities. They have launched a “Main Street Matters” program where they have committed to repainting 20 main street areas across the United States and Canada.

Since 1883, their network of local retailers has been an integral part of the communities they serve. Main Street is a part of all of our histories, which is why Benjamin Moore wants to help us take care of them, preserve them, and work to keep the businesses thriving.

Cape Girardeau has been chosen as one of the cities that the public can vote on to be chosen as one of the 20 main street areas to be painted. You can vote by visiting www.paintwhatmatters.com. One vote per IP address can be submitted each day through June 30.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- The Cape Fire Department responded to a truck on fire Sunday at a gas station on Sprigg Street Cape Girardeau.

Fire fighters say that a squirrel's nest was under the hood of the truck. After someone drove the truck the nest caught fire. This was near a gas pump at a gas station.

Concerned that the truck fire might spread to the gas pump, a gas station worker started to extinguish the fire.

Cape Fire Department crews came and made sure the fire was put out.

The engine compartment had fire damage to it along with the hood.

Sgt. Roman Smith

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Saturday is Armed Forces
Day and the 5KFVS in Cape Girardeau featured a special tribute to our troops.

Sgt. Roman Smith, a member
of the National Guard, ran the race carrying his bag full of training gear on
his back.

He partly did it as a
training exercise, but also to remind everyone of the sacrifices he and his
fellow soldiers make every single day.

"Everyone gets to see
just a small glimpse of what we do," said Sgt. Smith. "And, I try to
put a good name out, as often as we can.
Because a lot of people just see what they see on the news and it's
different when you see them in person for yourself."

Ways to stop your teen from texting and driving

When someone is texting and driving, they can travel an entire football field in just about the time it takes to read a text.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- When someone is texting and driving, they can travel an entire football field in just about the time it takes to read a text.

So, what can parents do to prevent their teen from getting in a deadly wreck from the dangerous practice?

"It's the biggest distraction on the road right now," said Road Rules Driving Instructor and Owner Debbie Michel.

Michel teaches new drivers, and one thing she makes sure they learn, don't text and drive.

"Best thing for them to do is to leave their cell phone at home, they're a new driver and they don't need that extra distraction in the car," said Michel.

Michel suggests locking cell phones in the trunk or glove box when new drivers hit the road.

"You take your eyes off the road for just a split second, and before you know it you look up and you're in the rear end of another car, it happens that quickly," said Michel.

She tells parents to lead by example.
