More than 100 year old building to be torn down in Cape

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - More changes are coming to downtown Cape Girardeau with demolition of more than 100 year old building.

A chain link fence already surrounds the empty structure in the 500 block of Broadway.

Trinity Lutheran Church owns the building.

Church Council President Dr. Ron Lessmann says the church board voted to take it down.

The church's pastor says the ultimate goal will be to add to the improvements already planned downtown.

"We'll probably either look into a green space area with benches.  Some people have mentioned parking," said Pastor Douglas Breite.  "The green space would be a way to enhance the Broadway corridor.  We believe that we're making an improvement to the area.  Also give us more of a presence on Broadway as well."

There is no word on exactly when the building will come down, but the demolition permit is good until late December.
