Gov. Nixon talks about jump starting economy

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon stopped in Cape Girardeau to talk about a plan to help southeast Missouri's economy after last spring's flooding.

The governor made a stop at Southeast Missouri State University to announce $170,000 for Southeast's Operation Jumpstart program.

It's a one year program to help rural communities recover from last spring's flooding by providing training to jumpstart new business.

Nixon's budget called for a $106 million cut to higher education.

However, Tuesday he proposed adding $40 million by using funds from the possible mortgage settlement.

Operation Jumpstart will offer classes at night throughout the spring and summer.  For more information, click here.
