"When I came out, I saw a huge cloud of smoke blowing that way," said Trey Howard, a resident who living in the lower unit of the apartment. "I ran around the building and was actually able to see the flames on the other side."

Sherrita Jones lives in the apartment unit that started the fire according to investigators. Her daughter says her mother was able to get out of the apartment and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Trent Tollison, who also lives in the complex, said he saw the fire and went door-to-door to tell people to get out.

"My first instinct was to come back in and get my roommate," said Tollison. "We wanted to get everyone out safe."

The owner called the insurance company and is waiting to hear the final totals on the damage.
