Man accused of assaulting woman for 2 days turns self in | News
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- A man accused of assaulting a woman for two days in a Cape Girardeau apartment has turned himself in to police.
Joseph R. Hurt, was wanted for domestic assault in the 2nd Degree. Cape Girardeau police say he turned himself in to Cape Girardeau Police Department Sunday around 9:40 p.m. He was taken to Cape Girardeau County Jail pending posting of bond.
Police are investigating a woman's reported assault by a man in Cape Girardeau over a two day period.
On Aug. 20 at approximately 8 p.m. officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to the 2800 block of Themis on report of a domestic assault report.
A woman told officers that she had been assaulted by a live in boyfriend, 24-year-old Joseph R. Hurt. The victim stated that he started assaulting her on Sunday afternoon and it continued through Monday. She received moderate non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The victim made the report after the suspect had left the apartment.
Badly bruised, sore and shaken, this 21-year-old woman who wants to be identified as "Jamie" shared her story with Heartland News Wednesday afternoon.
"He kept hitting me," said Jamie. "He turned the oven on to 550 (degrees) and told me he was going to put me in the oven."
"He wrapped his iPhone cord around my neck," Jamie said.
Jamie says her boyfriend of two months, Joseph Hurt, beat her over a two day period.
"And he was going to kill me then and nobody would find me," she said.
She says the majority of what she calls torture happened inside a Cape Girardeau apartment.
"His hands were so swollen," said Jamie. "He started kicking me and elbowed me in my chest and stomach."
According to Jamie, Hurt had a dead bolt on the outside of the door. She says between Sunday and Monday evening he left a few times, but locked her inside.
"He made bath water and told me to clean myself up and tried to drown me," said Jamie.
At one point Jamie says she quit breathing. She says Hurt would not allow her to wipe the blood off her battered body. Bruises cover her face and back.
Did she think she was going to die?
"Oh yes," said Jamie. "I can't believe I made it out alive."
Jamie believes Hurt was on drugs at the time. She says eventually he left and forgot to deadbolt the door.
That's when Jamie says she made her escape. Hurt faces second degree assault charges, but her mother feels it should be attempted murder.
"He told her he wanted to kill her more than once," said Jamie's mother Tammy Popp. "He wanted to kill her and eat her, and he was serious." You don't beat someone for over 24 hours and not be serious about that."
Jamie says she knows many women never escape abusive relationships, and that's why she's sharing her story.
"Because I know not many people call the police, most people let it keep going on," said Jamie. "Through my life I had found God, and I believed in it and took that faith that it would be okay."
