Does it Work Wednesday: Thundershirt | News
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Lisa Halter recently bought Thundershirt for her one-year old Shih Tsu, Sophia. The spry little dog is still quite playful, but pretty anxious any time Lisa turns on her vacuum sweeper or when company visits.
"I'd like for her to greet people, but then know it is OK, and she can calm down," said Lisa. "So far, I've seen this shirt as a great training tool for that."
Makers of Thundershirt say this shirt calms a dog's central nervous system, much like a swaddling blanket does for newborn babies. It promises to cure a variety of anxiety problems, as well as fear of thunderstorms, in dogs.
Lisa proves the claims true by showing us how Sophia instantly calms down once we place the shirt on her. She didn't run down the hall and retreat to the bedroom when Lisa swept with the vacuum. She didn't bark but once when we knocked at the door. She also wasn't skirting all around the apartment when wearing the Thundershirt. She had a much calmer demeanor and mainly sat down on the couch watching the activity in her home. She was still alert, but much more calm.
"I love it. I see it as a way to train her, and eventually, I won't even have to put the shirt on her. I will only put it on her when I anticipate company visiting or when I clean the house---the two instances I know upset her. Otherwise, I realize dogs barks and I love the playful demeanor of this little puppy. I just really think this will help her become more confident to be calm," Lisa said.
For this breed of dog and in these instances, we think it's pretty doggone amazing. We'll unleash a good grade 'A' for the $40 Thundershirt on this Does it Work test. You can buy it online, at Petco, Busch Pet Products and Mississippi Mutts, all in Cape Girardeau.
