CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Normal and North Sprigg Streets around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Cape Girardeau police Sgt. Rick Schmidt says the driver of a black 4x4 pickup truck was southbound on Sprigg Street and went to make a left turn on Normal Street and hit a person on a scooter.

Police say the female driver of the scooter was knocked unconscious. She was taken by EMS to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries.

North Sprigg was shut down to one lane of traffic and the west portion of Normal Street was shut down to traffic while crews investigated the crash.

Mark Alnutt, Director of Athletics at Southeast Missouri State University released the following statement on behalf of the university.

"The Southeast Missouri State University campus community was saddened to learn of the serious vehicular accident that occurred Sunday afternoon near the campus.

The accident involved Meg Herndon, a Southeast student athlete who is a member of the women's soccer team.

I had the opportunity to visit with the student's family at the hospital this afternoon.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student and her family at this time, and we wish her a full and complete recovery."
