1 killed, 1 arrested after Cape Girardeau shooting | News
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton says one person has died in a shooting Thursday evening.
Darcus T. Purl, 38, of Cape Girardeau was declared dead at a local hospital, according to Cape Girardeau Police.
Steven Lee Williams, 34, of Cape Girardeau is charged with second degree murder and armed criminal action.
Williams was arrested after he was shot in the legs and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say, in all, two victims were shot on Thursday evening. It happened around 9 p.m. Thursday in the area of S. Sprigg and Locust streets in Cape Girardeau.
According to the probable cause statement, Williams and Purl were arguing over a woman when the shots were fired. Williams claimed Purl has threatened to kill him numerous times in the past, according to the probable cause statement.
Georgia Cowson is the mother of two of Purl's children. She says the argument started over the kids.
"I wasn't about me," Cowson said. "It was about the baby."
She says the argument kept escalating.
"I tried to pull him and say let's go in the house," Cowson said. "I can call the police. I got an ex-parte, he's not supposed to be here. I guess it made Steve mad because he just pulled out the gun and started shooting."
Family members say they are torn apart over Darcus Purl death. He's a father a three. His sisters and niece call him a great friend and parent.
Carol Harris says it's hard to believe her baby brother is dead.
"Oh God he loved those kids," said Harris. "They would come down there every day he took care of them kids. He loved them to death that was his heart."
Purl's niece said it all happened after he dropped her off at her boyfriend's house. Family members believe Williams shot Perl over a woman.
"It was all over my uncle's baby momma, that's it that's what it all boiled down to," said Iesha Purl.
"He was a good person," said Purl. "He rarely got into any kind of fights or anything like that. I mean, he just liked everybody. Didn't carry a gun, never carried a gun. Loved his kids, loved them."
Iesha Purl says Williams accused her and others of pulling the trigger.
"That's crazy," said Purl. "How can I shoot you I'm way across town."
Now family members say they want justice and focus on what's best for Darcus Purl's three children.
Williams has just been released from the Cape Girardeau County Jail on Sept. 10 after serving 30 days on a domestic assault in the third degree charge, according to probable cause statement.
Williams' bond was set at $2 million.
The case is still currently under investigation.
