Today is National Walk to School Day.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Today is National Walk to School Day.  It's a national movement to get kids more active.

Local schools participate in the nationwide movement and organizers say it helps in the classroom too.

"They're more relaxed in the classroom, their brain are already active, they're ready to go, " said organizer, Jen Rediger. "They're ready to focus on what the teacher needs to teach them in class," she added.

Three Cape Girardeau elementary also use Wednesday's even to kick off their Walking School Bus program.

Alma Schrader, Clippard and Franklin participate in Cape public schools. This is Franklin's first year to participate.

The Walking School Bus runs for 6 weeks. Check with your child's school to find out if they participate in National Walk to School Day or a Walking School Bus program.
