An overnight fire gutted a downtown Cape Girardeau, Mo apartment building.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- An overnight fire gutted a downtown Cape Girardeau apartment building, leaving several people homeless.

The apartment building caught on fire around midnight Friday on 14 North Fountain Street.

The fire is believed to have started in the first floor apartment kitchen, according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

The smoke was so thick it filled the KFVS newsroom, which is just a couple blocks from the building.

One person was home when the fire started and made it out safely.

One firefighter was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

No word on a cause, although the Cape Girardeau fire chief says it started on the first floor of the home. The fire is under investigation at this time.

Crews from Jackson and Scott City helped Cape Girardeau fire crews put out the fire.
