Cape Girardeau improvements: police station, city hall, and transfer station | News
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- Cape Girardeau city leaders are trying to prioritize a list of improvement projects.
City council members met with staff Thursday night to start narrowing down that discussion.
On the list, there's about $156 million dollars worth of projects, but only $60 million available in the next five years.
So which ones will the city tackle first? City Manager Scott Meyer said facilities are a big need. On the list: the police station, city hall, and the transfer station.
"We've had pipes they've caved in on the inside," said Cape Girardeau Police Officer Lt. Barry Hovis.
The city built the Cape Girardeau Police station almost 40 years ago.
"We have electrical systems in here that's blowing fuses all the time," said Hovis.
And now the station, is in need for some upgrades. The department is well over the capacity of about 70 people the building was made for.
"We actually put a trailer here to move about 20 plus people out into that," said Hovis.
They've turned closets into offices and observation rooms into a home for copy machines.
"We just don't have a lot of space to put stuff anymore, cause when you start filling up the closets with officers, then the stuff you would normally store in closets get put other places," said Hovis.
The city's transfer station is also due for a facelift.
"There's a lot of wear and tear on the facility itself so basically we are needing to bring the facility back up to at least at a minimum back up to where it was 20, 25 years ago," said Tim Gramling with Cape Girardeau Public Works.
The transfer station is where trash goes from dumpsters to the landfill. People can drop off their waste for a charge.
Gramling said the station brings in revenue for the city and helps keep waste fees for citizens low.
But Gramling said the scale at the station is on its last leg.
"We keep having it repaired, and we keep being told that they're not sure the next time it breaks down its going to be able to be repaired," said Gramling.
And Cape Girardeau City Hall could use some upgrades.
"The halls are not heated or cooled, accessibility is tough," said Cape Girardeau City Manager Scott Meyer.
Now city leaders have to decide what to do.
"We really do understand its tax payer money, we're tax payers too, it's important that we do a good job spending the money, so that's why we have a prioritization process," said Meyer.
"Whether we would add on to this building, or actually build another one, we're wanting to make sure we're spending the tax payers dollars wisely," said Hovis.
In the meantime, the employees said they'll continue business as usual.
"We're going to try to get the job done, cause crime goes on whether we've got a new building or no building," said Hovis.
Meyer said they've already started some prioritization.
"Probably the police station and transfer station are ones we're going to move ahead of city hall at this time, looking at city hall thinking maybe there's some opportunities in the future," said Meyer.
Leaders should finalize the plan of which projects will get the money by the end of March.
