Postal Service to stop Saturday delivery
News

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- The United States Postal Service announced it will stop first class mail delivery on Saturdays beginning in August.

The Postal Service says it simply can't afford Saturday mail delivery anymore.

However, packages and mail-order medications will still be delivered on Saturdays.

The head of the Letter Carriers Union says the move will hurt millions of customers, especially businesses, rural communities, and others that depend on Saturday delivery.

But the Postal Service says due to the nearly $16 billion it lost last fiscal year, it just can't continue Saturday delivery.

"The move to five day mail delivery reflects a change in market demand," said Postmaster General Patrick Donahue.  "We are simply not in a financial position to maintain six day delivery."

Donahue says seven out of ten Americans agree with the cost saving measure.
