One block of Broadway could be added to National Register of Historic Places | News
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- The 400 block of Broadway could soon be on the National Register of Historic Places.
A state advisory board will vote on the matter Friday.
Dr. Steven Hoffman at Southeast Missouri State University is leading the charge to get the block added to the register.
The 500 block of Broadway, along with several other parts of Old Town Cape, are already listed.
Dr. Hoffman says he feels confident the application will be approved on Friday.
"After they approve it, then it will be sent to the keeper of the National Register in Washington D.C. and once it's approved at that level, then it will be formally listed on the actual register," Hoffman said.
Business owners will benefit from the registration.
"The property owner is eligible for historic tax credits which will enable the rehabilitation of that building," Hoffman said. "So we'll be seeing a lot of construction and activity and that building put to new use and new life in large part because of the tax credit program."
It will take another two months for the block to be officially listed in the register.
