CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)-
Heartland lifeguards say swimming lessons aren't just about teaching kids how to enjoy the water, it's a possibly life saving skill.
Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for kids under the age of 14m and many of those victims drown simply because they never learned how to swim.
Researchers say that if a child doesn't learn to swim by the third grade, they likely never will.
These are the major signs of drowning:
Their head is low in the water.
It may be tilted back and their mouth open.
They may look like they're climbing an invisible ladder.
Small children may appear like they're trying to roll onto their back.
