CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Ten students from the Zeta Alpha Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda at Southeast Missouri State University attended the 2012 National Leadership Conference June 24-27 in San Antonio, Texas.

The students competed with more than 2,000 top students from across the country.

Having earned the honor to attend the national conference following success in the local and state arenas, the students competed in more than 50 events, including accounting, business ethics, emerging business issues, entrepreneurship, community service project and website development. Most events had cash awards for the leading individuals and teams.

“Attending NLC is always a fantastic experience. Not only is it competitive, but it allows you to meet amazing people,” said Katie Stephens, newly elected community service chair of Phi Beta Lambda who attended the conference for the third time.

According to the university, results of the competition include:

  • Chris Dzurick of Fulton, Mo., placed second nationally in impromptu speaking
  • Daniel Levesque of Marion, Ill., was awarded first place in leadership and placed sixth in financial concepts
  • Megan Stackle of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., was awarded fifth place nationally in both word processing and local chapter annual business report
  • Katie Stephens and Josh James, both of Jackson, Mo., and Stackle qualified in the top 15 in the event, management analysis and decision making
  • Devin Melton of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., was awarded eighth place in computer applications
  • Placing eighth in contemporary sports issues was Justin Bader of Jackson, Mo.
  • Other members in attendance were Wade Kraenzle of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Malli Tahghighi of St. Louis and Daniel Schuenemeyer of Scott City, Mo.

Seven students also attended the prestigious Institute for Leaders, a two-day intensive program designed to hone leadership, communications, entrepreneurship and officer skills.
