McCaskill to tour Mo. manufacturing centers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Mo. Sen. Claire McCaskill is scheduled to kick off a manufacturing jobs tour.

She is scheduled to visit industry in Perryville, Jackson and Sikeston on Monday, Aug. 8.

McCaskill will tour Sabereline, Proctor and Gamble and Alan Wire Company with owners, managers and employees.

According to a press release, the senator is looking for new ways to support local businesses and encourage job growth creation.

Gordonville soldier one of 10 honored at opening ceremony

GORDONVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Service members from Missouri who have died from wounds  suffered in a war zone since Sept. 11 were recognized Sunday during the opening of Remembering Our Fallen at the state capitol rotunda.

In the ten service members recognized, one was from Gordonville, Mo. SSG Bradley Skelton of the 1138th Engineer Company (Sapper) died on February 26, 2008 in Iraq.

Remembering Our Fallen is a touring display made of photos of 130 service members from Missouri who have died, including 10 from the Missouri National Guard.

Several families of those guardsmen attended the event.

During the ceremony, a roll call of each service member's name was read aloud by a family member or a member of American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5 of Jefferson City.

The display will stay at the capitol until Friday, August 5.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A car wash Saturday benefited Jacque Waller's children.

Friends of Jacque Waller were washing cars for a $5 minimum donation at Advanced Auto Parts.

They had collected around $121 by noon.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A well known and successful Cape Girardeau businessman has lost his battle with cancer.

"With great sadness, we at Plaza Tire Service have said good bye to Founder Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes.  Surrounded by family, Pee Wee passed away at his Cape Girardeau, Mo.

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The deadline to apply for individual disaster assistance for Missouri residents will be Friday, July 29.

This is for homeowners and renters affected by storms, flooding or tornadoes between April 19 and June 6.

Police: 18 people were arrested on a drug round up in Cape Girardeau Co.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Police Department announced Friday they made 18 arrests in a drug round up on Tuesday, July 19.

The arrests were made by officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department, SEMO Drug Task Force, Missouri Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshalls Service, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department and Missouri National Guard Counter-Drug Unit on several arrest warrants.

Those arrested include:

  • Hillari E. Luebbers, 23 of Cape Girardeau was arrested for distribution of a controlled substance. Bond was set at $25,000.
  • Richard S. Wren, 28 of Cape Girardeau was arrested for sale of a controlled substance. Bond was set at $50,000.
  • Corwyne A. Mann, 20 of Cape Girardeau was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Bond was set at $20,000.
  • Victoria L. Glueck, 18 of Cape Girardeau was arrested for two counts of distribution of a controlled substance time.

Nominate someone you know for the Mo. Older Worker of the Year contest

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The state of Missouri is looking for your nominations for their annual Older Worker of the Year contest.

The contest looks to honor a Missouri resident who is 60 or older, employed at least 20 hours a week and shows dependability and new skills on the job.

The winner and regional finalists will be recognized at a two-day awards ceremony in Jefferson City, Mo. in November.

"Older workers play a vital role in our economy," said Margaret Donnelly, director of the Department of Health and Senior Services, which is helping to sponsor the contest.  "They're highly valued for qualities such as judgment, commitment to quality, attendance and punctuality. Companies who recruit mature workers can attract top talent in a changing workforce."

The Older Worker of the Year for 2010 was Nina George, a teacher's aide for 44 years.
