Couple celebrates 70 years of marriage

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Fred and Helen Moyer celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Senior Citizen's Hall.

The couple is originally from the Mounds area.

They met and got married in 1943.

They've endured the best of times and the worst of times, including when Fred was a prisoner of war during World War II.

"It gets better every year and it has it really has," Helen Moyers said. "He's just a jewel to live with."

"We see some of our relatives we haven't seen in quite a while," Fred Moyer said. "It's just an overwhelming thing to me to be with my family."

They Moyers believe they were made for each other and couldn't be happier.

Southeast Missouri State University features Alumni Day

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)  - The Department of Mass Media at Southeast Missouri State University is sponsoring its first Alumni Day Wednesday, March 27, featuring an Alumni Seminar with recent graduates focusing on their first job and first five years after graduation.

The event is scheduled for noon in Rose Theatre.

The Alumni Day is sponsored by the department as part of the Herb and Peggy Taylor Endowment, a $90,000 endowed fund that provides scholarships for students and supports activities to bring students and alumni together to support career development, internships and other programs.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) – Old Town Cape held its Annual Dinner on Thursday, February 28 at the Isle Casino Cape Girardeau Event Center.

Six awards were presented, recognizing outstanding efforts of individuals to preserve, promote, and revitalize the Old Town Cape district.

Cape Girardeau hospital adds 2 people to executive team

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saint Francis Healthcare System has added two members to its executive team.

Teri Kreitzer, director of Human Resources, and Diane Smith, chief information officer, have joined Steven C. Bjelich, FACHE-D, President and Chief Executive Officer; vice presidents Tony Balsano, Marilyn Curtis, Jeannie Fadler, Dr. James Schell and Barbara W. Thompson; and Rick Essner, director of Environmental Engineering, on the Medical Center’s leadership team.

Smith joined the Saint Francis Family in October of 1973 and Kreitzer began in July 1990. Their collective longevity and outstanding service to the Medical Center are invaluable.

Saint Francis’ executive team meets weekly to implement the strategic operations of the Healthcare System. Additionally, the team meets monthly at an off-site day long meeting to examine and discuss long term issues that require more discussion time than is possible in a weekly meeting.

Seyer honored as American Legion Teacher of the Year

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saxony Lutheran High School teacher Brenda S. Seyer has been named American Legion Teacher of the Year.

Seyer has taught art at Saxony Lutheran High School since 2000. She designed the art program and is active in the SEMO and Southeast Arts Council summer art program. Her students have won awards in the VFW poster contest and their art has been displayed in the Congressional Art Show in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

"We are delighted to recognize another fine teacher," said Dean Monahan of the Legion's Education Committee.

The award will be given at he Legion's banquet on March 13 and included an honors plaque and a check for $350.

"I'm honored to received this award," said Seyer. "I'm proud of my students who have achieved fine artwork and won many awards in our community."

Monahan says awards are open to all teachers and he would be glad to hear of other fine teacher who should be recognized.

Cape Girardeau chamber adds Business Development Specialist

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of John Haggerty as Business Development Specialist. 

According to the chamber, Haggerty will work with businesses in the Cape Girardeau area helping with growth or development needs.

Haggerty earned a bachelor of criminal justice degree and studied public administration at Southeast Missouri State University.

According to the chamber, Haggerty brings a wealth of experience in business operations and management, training, budgeting, marketing, facility maintenance and human resources. Haggerty previously worked with PAJCO, Pritzker Realty Group and Drury Development.

New Executive Director of the Council on COPHE named

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The new Executive Director of the Council on Public Higher Education has been named.

Paul Wagner begins his duties Feb. 27. He replaces Brian Long, who was named Director of the Department of Revenue in late December 2012.

COPHE is the organization of the 13 public four-year universities in Missouri.

“We are very pleased that Paul Wagner has accepted our offer to be our next Executive Director,” said Dr. Brady Deaton, Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia and Chair of COPHE. “Paul has tremendous experience and knowledge, and over his 16-year career he has developed strong relationships in Jefferson City. We are confident he will do an outstanding job in representing the public four-year universities.”
