Cape Girardeau hospital welcomes new director of physician practices

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saint Francis Medical Center is introducing a new director of physician practices.

Sunil Mungee, MBA, will be responsible for fostering, developing and facilitating the improvement of the hospital's medical partners.

According to Saint Francis, Mungee has extensive experience in practice management and physician recruitment. He previously was manager of operations, business development and marketing at Cherry Tree Medical Associates in Uniontown, Pa., a multi-specialty physician practice. He also has experience in physician recruitment in underserved medical areas, business development and electronic medical record implementation.

Gov. Nixon appoints Ponder to Board of Curators

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Michael J. Ponder, of Cape Girardeau, to the University of Missouri Board of Curators, on Friday.

The board of curators oversees the operation of the four-campus University of Missouri System.

Ponder (D) is a 1990 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law and obtained his bachelor’s degree from Central Methodist University in Fayette. He is a partner in the Cape Girardeau law firm of Cook, Barkett, Ponder and Wolz. Ponder has been active with the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce and the local United Way, as well as the Cape Riverfront Market Steering Committee. He has served on the State Board of Education since 2009. The Governor has appointed Ponder for a term ending Jan. 1, 2019.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University has named a new assistant to the president for equity and diversity issues.

Nathan Stephens, senior coordinator of the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center at the University of Missouri-Columbia, has been named assistant. His appointment is effective Jan. 15. He replaces Jim Cook, director of Human Resources, who served in the position in an interim capacity.

The assistant to the president for equity and diversity issues provides pro-active, strategic, campus-wide leadership, direction and coordination in the areas of equity and diversity issues. He will be responsible for supervising and developing approaches designed to enhance the University community's appreciation for cultural diversity, its climate of tolerance, respect for the rights of all persons and its adherence to affirmative action and equal opportunity.

Gov. Nixon announces appointment of Knudtson to university Board of Regents

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Gov. Jay Nixon announced Thursday the appointment of Jay Knudtson to the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents.

The six-member Board of Regents appoints the President of the university, employs faculty and staff and makes budgetary and policy decisions necesary to implement the university's mission.

Knudtson is executive vice president, chief lending officer and a bank board director at the First Missouri State Bank. He served as Mayor of Cape Girardeau from 2002 to 2010, and as chairman of the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Board from 1995 to 2001. Knudtson received the Vandiver Show Me State Award from Southeast Missouri State University in 2006.

The Governor has appointed him for a term ending Jan. 1, 2019.

Sheriff Jordan not seeking nomination to replace Emerson

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John D. Jordan announced Thursday, January 3 he is not seeking the nomination to replace retiring Congresswoman JoAnn Emerson.

Jordan said he is grateful and flattered for being considered as a possible candidate for the 8th Congressional District Seat. He said he is humbled beyond measure to be considered to seek the congressional seat, but he is happy being sheriff.

"Even more humbling is that after hinting this might be my last term, I've been bombarded by staff and the public in general encouraging me to run for sheriff one more time in 2016," Redmon said. "Lord willing and my health is good, I will likely run for sheriff one more time."

2012 Holiday Military Greetings from Willard family

(KFVS) - KFVS12 and The Heartland's CW are once again airing holiday military greetings in special public service announcements that are scheduled to run through New Year's Day.

We think it's important to remember those men and women who are away from their homes so that we can feel safer in ours. The greetings consist of personal messages from service persons stationed at military locations around the world whose families live in the KFVS12 viewing area.

This is a message from Steve Willard, an Army Sergeant, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Willard and his family are sending seasons greetings to family in Cape Girardeau, Bloomfield and Puxico.

Students can apply now through Feb. 15 for foundation scholarship

(KFVS) - Students in Missouri and Kentucky can begin applying Saturday, December 1 for the Jimmy Rane Foundation scholarship.

The Jimmy Rane Foundation provides sholarship opportunities to students who diplay academic excellence, exemplary leadership skills and community involvement. The foundation benefits those who exhibit financial need and awards students who demonstrate a strong desire and ability to overcome tough barriers to achieve their goals.

Students can apply for the scholarship through February 15, 2013.
