What Superstorm Sandy means to the Heartland

The National Hurricane Center says Sandy had a width of more than 1,000 miles.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS)- The National Hurricane Center says Sandy had a width of more than 1,000 miles.

To put it into perspective, that's like driving from Cape Girardeau up to White County, Illinois down to Caldwell County, Kentucky across the Heartland to Ripley County, Missouri up to Jefferson County, Illinois down into Tennessee in Weakley County up and over to Washington County, Missouri and back to Cape. That totals 1,000 miles.

If you wanted a straight shot, it would be like driving from Cape Girardeau to Mexico.

Cape Girardeau County, the biggest county in the Heartland, has 129 people per square mile. Manhattan, one of the bigger areas impacted, has close to 70,000 people per square mile.

Hurricane Katrina had a width of 415 miles back in 2005. Irene, that hit the northeast last year, had a width of 600 miles. The year before Igor measured at 920 miles and sandy this year reached it's peak width at 1000 miles in the Atlantic.

Cape Girardeau hospital offers genetic counseling to fight hereditary cancers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Saint Francis Medical Center has launched a genetic counseling program which will expand resources for clinicians and enhancing care for patients and families.

The hospital says this first-in-region program, which focuses primarily on genetics and cancer, will be led by a board certified genetic counselor.

According to the medical center, genetic counseling enhances clinical practice by providing specialized patient education, care and support. Genetic counselors partner with physicians to identify individuals and families with a high risk of developing cancer, promote early detection through appropriate screening, explain complex genetic information, coordinate genetic testing and guide patients through the decision-making process.
