Cape Girardeau County Tea Party to hold congressional forum

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Members of the Cape Girardeau County Tea Party are inviting all to hear form Missouri 8th District Congressional candidates.

The event is Wednesday, May 22 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Public Library at 711 N. Clark. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Participants in the candidate forum are:

  • Dr. Robert George
  • Steve Hodges
  • Tom Brown

Arrive early to meet the candidates.

There will be no regular Tea Party meeting for May.

Missouri 8th District candidates answer questions

MISSOURI (KFVS)- The special election to fill the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 8th district is just about a month away on June 4.

Missouri voters will choose someone to fill the seat Rep. JoAnn Emerson vacated.

Steve Hodges is the Democrat candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since elected in 2006, serving Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties.

Jason Smith is the Republican candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since voters elected him in 2005 and serves Crawford, Dent, Phelps and Reynolds counties.

Bill Slantz is the Libertarian candidate, and founded his own consulting company.

Doug Enyart is the Constitution Party candidate and founded his company in forestry consulting.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Students came together on Wednesday to discuss current events at the 28th Annual Optimist Youth in Government Day at Cape Girardeeau City Hall.

Students from Cape Central High School, Eagle Ridge Christian School and Notre Dame Regional High School participated. They job shadowed local government officials and saw first hand how city, county and federal government works.

During a mock city council meeting students discussed issues including:

  • Urban deer safety
  • Scooter safety
  • Bicycle lanes
  • Outdoor noise and music
  • A potential smoking ban
  • Texting while driving
  • Housing farm animals within the city limits

"This is what controls our lives," said Student City Clerk Sara Coello. "It's something to know how it works. We need to know what we can do about it and its how our lives are managed and we need to be a part of it."

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is providing Missourians a financial “spring cleaning” checklist.

Zweifel says he hopes Missourians will use to keep their finances in order and their property from becoming unclaimed property.

“There are a few simple steps each of us can take on a regular basis to keep our records up-to-date and our estates in order,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “It is important that we check on our accounts, safe deposit boxes, life insurance policies and wills. By making sure that our contact information is correct, our fees are paid up and changes made, Missourians can help keep their property where it belongs and avoid having to file Unclaimed Property claims to get it back.”

Here are a few “spring cleaning” tips for your finances from Zweifel:

1.      Make sure your bank has your current information. If you have moved or changed your name, be sure to inform your bank.

Tea Party to host Jackson R2 school board candidate forum

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The members of the Cape County Tea Party invite the citizens of the Jackson R2 School District to hear from School Board Candidates who wish to represent them at a Candidate Forum.

The forum will be held on March 28 7 p.m. at the University Of Missouri Extension in Jackson, Mo.

Two candidates have confirmed their attendance (Gerald Adams and Alaina Hinze), and although one candidate has declined, it is hoped that all candidates will eventually take part in the forum.

The format is still under development, but it will be a typical candidate forum with time allotted for candidate opening statements, candidates under sequestration, questions repeated for all candidates, and possibly, a closing statement for each candidate.

Cape Girardeau chamber adds Business Development Specialist

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of John Haggerty as Business Development Specialist. 

According to the chamber, Haggerty will work with businesses in the Cape Girardeau area helping with growth or development needs.

Haggerty earned a bachelor of criminal justice degree and studied public administration at Southeast Missouri State University.

According to the chamber, Haggerty brings a wealth of experience in business operations and management, training, budgeting, marketing, facility maintenance and human resources. Haggerty previously worked with PAJCO, Pritzker Realty Group and Drury Development.

KRCU to broadcast Mo. State of the State Address

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - KRCU Public Radio at Southeast Missouri State University announces plans to air Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's State of the State address on Monday, January 28 at 7 p.m.

The annual address to a joint session of the Missouri General Assembly will take place in the chamber of the House of Representatives in the State Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo. Gov. Nixon will detail his legislative and economic priorities during his address.

The State of the State coverage will include the Republican response to the governor's speech.
