Southeast Missouri Food Bank receives $2,000 grant

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Food Bank has received a $2,000 grant.

According to the Food Bank, he grant is part of the Restaurant Community Grants program from the Darden Foundation.

The grants program is in its second year. The grant helps each Darden-owned restaurant help award a $1,000 grant to support local community programs, according to the Food Bank.

The donation will support Southeast Missouri Food Bank’s BackPacks For Friday program to Cape Girardeau schools.

“The support from our local Darden partners, Olive Garden and Red Lobster, has been incredible,” said Karen Green, Southeast Missouri Food Bank’s Executive Director “not only do they financially support the program, but throughout the year employees volunteer their time to help further the Food Bank’s mission.”

Cape Girardeau businesses asked to host parties for 'Great Race'

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau is asking businesses to host pit stop and welcome parties to help the city win the hospitality sward for the Great Race 2013.

Businesses along the race route from Kingshighway to Broadway are invited to host parties celebrating the arrival of over 100 racers to the Cape Girardeau area on Tuesday, June 25. 

According to the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pit Stop Parties will be judged on visibility (signage, balloons),  originality and creativity.

The winning business will receive the Pit Stop Party Spirit Award to be displayed in their store.

Businesses and organizations in the Riverfront District  from Water, Main and Spanish Streets are also encouraged to take part in the Great Race celebration with welcome parties.

Businesses will be judged on extended hours, special deals or sales and visibility of the celebration.

Students participate in Government Day

Students participate in Government Day

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Students came together on Wednesday to discuss current events at the 28th Annual Optimist Youth in Government Day at Cape Girardeeau City Hall.

Students from Cape Central High School, Eagle Ridge Christian School and Notre Dame Regional High School participated. They job shadowed local government officials and saw first hand how city, county and federal government works.

During a mock city council meeting students discussed issues including:

  • Urban deer safety
  • Scooter safety
  • Bicycle lanes
  • Outdoor noise and music
  • A potential smoking ban
  • Texting while driving
  • Housing farm animals within the city limits

"This is what controls our lives," said Student City Clerk Sara Coello. "It's something to know how it works. We need to know what we can do about it and its how our lives are managed and we need to be a part of it."

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Do you owe a library fine? Now is the time to cash in that fine for a non-perishable food item.

It is a Cape Girardeau Public Library program.  Just bring in a non-perishable food item to pay for your book fine. 

One food item equals 50 cents.

National Library Week is April 14-20, 2013.

1st Annual Parker King Showcase May 10-11

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The 1st Annual Parker King Showcase will take place on Mother's Day Weekend, May 10-11.

The baseball tournament will be held at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau in honor of 10-year-old Parker King who lost his life in an ATV crash.

Organizers will be selling P4P (Play for Parker) t-shirts, food and will have a raffle.

Money raised goes toward Parker's memorial.

Parker's baseball team is one of the teams organizing the event.

Food Bank asks for help before losing tax credits

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri Food Bank officials say without help, they will lose their tax credits at the end of March.

According to the food bank, they have $154,000 in tax credits that must be used or the charity will lose funding.

Officials say donors can get a Missouri income tax cut for 50-percent of the value of their donation, and other tax benefits may apply based on the actual tax liability of the donor.

The funds are expected to be used to expand a warehouse facility.

"This is a great opportunity for eligible donors to direct their tax dollars locally instead of writing that check to the state, we just need their donation by the March 31st deadline," said Karen Green, Executive Director, Southeast Missouri Food Bank.
