CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - When Cape Central Junior High School Athletic Director Terry Kitchen (CHS Class of ’70) put the word out to his class mates that Tiger Fieldhouse needed updating, it didn’t take long for benefactors to line up to help.

Coach Kitchen, at right in the photo, also contacted national and international unions and businesses which benefited from construction projects of the District’s 2010 bond issue. They responded generously by supplying state-of-the-art scoreboards, which can be seen in the photo.

Lonnie Lusk, Class of ’71 and member of the Cape Noon Optimist Club, at left in the photo, poses with a new Tiger head, painted by local artist Gary West, Class of 1970. It will be hung above the new scoreboard.

“We are so fortunate to have alumni who care about their alma mater and organizations which support us,” Coach Kitchen said.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - College-bound students at Cape Central High School are defraying college expenses while the local community is benefiting from tutoring and mentoring the students provide at no charge, thanks to the innovative A+ Scholarship Program, which has grown dramatically at CHS.

Two years ago, ten students were eligible for the scholarship, and this year the number has nearly quadrupled.

According to Program Coordinator Janet Rueseler, “CHS participants have individually contributed at least 50 hours of tutoring and mentoring at no charge to area students. In addition to keeping their own grades and attendance up, our A+ students have mentored and tutored at CHS, CJHS, Middle School, most of the elementary schools, Boys and Girls Club and The Bridge."

The Class of 2013 contributed 2,535 tutoring hours. A+ Scholarship funds pay the tuition and general fees at community colleges and vocational/technical schools.
