New monkeys featured at Lazy L Safari Park

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Lazy L Safari Park will feature some new primates this summer.

In addition to the Ring-tailed Lemurs, Diana Monkeys, Patas Monkeys, and Ruffed Lemurs (black & white) now call Monkey Row home.

The Diana Monkey is an Old World Monkey found in West Africa.

Patas Monkeys are a ground-dwelling monkey distributed over semi-arid areas of West Africa and into East Africa.

Black & White Ruffed Lemurs are primates and the largest of the lemurs.

Zoo Director Vicki Lantz says they try to bring a new exhibit each year. They got the monkeys on loan from other private zoos.

In addition to the new Monkey Row, the alligators got a new pool added to their enclosure.

Lazy L Safari Park is a walk-thru zoo featuring animals from antelope to zebras.

Visitors can get up close and personal with more than 40 different species of exotic animals.

Health Center: Skunk in northwest Cape Girardeau Co. tests positive for rabies

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center announced Thursday that a skunk in the northwest part of Cape Girardeau County has tested positive for rabies.

The health center says no known human or animal exposure has been identified. The Health Center has also learned that four rabid animals have been detected already in Missouri for the 2013 reporting year – and all of them have come from the southeastern part of the state.

According to the Health Center, we will be entering the time of year when more people are bitten and otherwise injured by animals as a result of increased outdoor activities. One risk of being bitten by animals such as skunks, bats, and stray dogs and cats is that of developing rabies.
